My mom will be 80 this Spring. Although there are times when her driving makes me nervous, I still will get in the passenger seat. Plus she still earns the award I gave her years ago – best parallel parker this side of the Mississippi. I proudly exhibit this inherited skill.
All said, when she told me yesterday that she was going to attend a Driving Refresher Course for Seniors. I gave out a big, Yippee. Great idea.
Then I quickly covered my mouth.
Did I say that out loud?
We laughed hard together over the phone line.
My mom is not one of the seniors driving out there who drives too slow and doesn’t use their blinker. Just the opposite. She drives too fast and forgets to turn off her blinker.
We all need refresher courses. And if I’m taking classes at 80, still open to learning new things, not stuck in my ways, the world will be all the better. Not necessarily safer… where do you think I learned how to drive fast?
