Monday’s Random Thought: An Honoring January 26, 2015

I get up early to write, I light the white candle in the the kitchen window.

A group of women gather for one of my monthly retreats, I light the green candle saved for this circle.

We sit down for dinner, I light the brown candle.

A friend calls to ask me to keep her relative in my prayers, I light the closest candle I can find.

I gather all the candles on the bathtub and am surrounded not only by bubbles, but bright light.

I light a candle to mark these moments as sacred.

I honor the Holy within me, within those gathered both in body, thought and Spirit.

A single candle flame reminds me to pause, to create, to invite, to be still, to pray, to seek, to be intentional, to celebrate, to say thank you.

I light candles not only for the hope and beauty they add to my life, but because their soft glow touches my soul.

Are you a candle person? Do you save candles for special occasions? Or do you light candles any time you have the opportunity?

Monday’s Random Thought: Serenity Now January 12, 2015

I found this heart rock on the beach this morning. A beautiful reminder that peace is available to us. If I could stumble upon this symbol of love (and so many other things to me) on a bed of millions of rocks, we can all find peace within, one step at a time.

I found this heart rock on the beach this morning. A beautiful reminder that peace is available to us. If I could stumble upon this symbol of love (and so many other things to me) on a bed of millions of rocks, we can all find peace within, one step at a time.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things that I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

I bet you have heard of the Serenity Prayer at least once in your life, right? A prayer that has become popular in The Twelve Step Program. If you haven’t, maybe you watched the Seinfeld episode, when Frank Castonza tries on repeating the mantra, “Serenity Now”, to help his blood pressure.

Serenity. We all desire peace. I feel confident in that assumption. At least once in your life you have felt the deep down desire to experience peacefulness, yes? More than likely during a time of chaos.

I bought a Serenity Prayer Candle from my daughter’s school magazine drive this fall and yesterday I decided to turn the message into the focus of “family church.” Lately we haven’t been going to an actual church on a regular basis and instead create our own version of “church” at home. Sitting around the candle I opened up the conversation as to how we could use this message in our lives.

The words are easy to memorize. Pretty easy to repeat. But to really think about them and reflect on their meaning is a whole other thing. So I shared with my kids and hubby that I would like to work on “letting go” of doing everything for them and allow them to fall and take responsibility to get back up without mama always coming to the rescue. They liked this. I was shocked as hell that the words even came out of my mouth. Now I really get to breathe that in and discover what that means for me as a mother, a woman a human being.

We all have our own perspective. Hearing these words for a long time they had a totally different and new meaning for me sitting around the table at family church yesterday morning.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things that I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

And if that doesn’t work, Serenity Now,
is always available. I invite you to be open to what that means for you in the moment. For today’s serenity could be far different than yesterday’s. Just know it is available and it is possible. This peace is waiting for you, right at the center of your being and it doesn’t mean chaos won’t still be happening around you. It’s about tapping into your wisdom and walking courageously through the door of serenity as you surrender the outcome asking for help along the way. This isn’t done over night, practice is usually required.

When will you begin the work? If you like company along the journey we can embark on it together, for I am practicing every day.

Monday’s Random Thought: The Power of One – a.k.a. Word Power January 5, 2015

What if instead of a long list of New Year’s resolutions and a 2015 agenda with a long lineup of goals, you chose one word?

There is power in even a single word. We know this. One word spoken to us has changed us whether it was to cut us down or build us up.

A year ago I chose my one word for 2014 based on years of longing. I chose PEACE in 2014. By setting this as my one word intention, not only did items get checked off the goal list, I didn’t forget my resolutions before the first month of the year was over. I would come back to this word again and again. Reflecting back, sticking to that one word when it came to making decisions, getting things accomplished and moving forward in my life, it all happened. It happened peacefully. And what ever didn’t happen I was at peace. I learned to surrender. Being at peace doesn’t mean that everything is in order and serene. In 2014 I learned how to find and create peace within even while standing in the middle of the storm.

For 2015 I have chosen Presence as my New Year intention and four days in I already see a shift in how I am showing up to myself, my family, the world. I have spent a long time thinking about the concept of Being Here Now and being completely absorbed in the moment rather in the past or in the non-existant future. Now I have an entire year to practice Presence. I can’t wait to see what shows up.

I invite you, if you are open and feeling overwhelmed about the start of the New Year to take some time to reflect on one word that can carry you this New Year. A word that you are drawn to for it’s possibility, power, grace or whatever it is that pulls at your heart strings. Calling you forward. Calling you to exactly where you need to be.
