Monday’s Random Thought: A Way not a Thing

When it comes to prayer it is not one passive action completed then done with altogether. To me prayer is a way of being and how I strive to live my life. Prayer is personal, individual and the line of communication in your spiritual relationship with God or however you refer to your Higher Power.

It is not just a thing because it has a vast array of methods to be demonstrated. One can sing praise in the shower, on a walk, in church or driving down the highway. Prayer can be wordless. A piece of art, a conversation with a friend,  a letter can all be ways to give thanks, honor, recognize and be in awe of God’s miracles. Silence is my favorite form of prayer. The creation of a garden is an ongoing prayer, life and death in an endless pattern.

Prayer is much more than asking for help, it is being willing to sit still in the silence and listen to the voice within. It is about trust, surrender and faith. I receive God’s answers through interaction with another person and hearing the still, quiet voice within.  There is no one way to communicate with God.

When another asks me to pray for them, I immediately respond, “Done.” Their words have been spoken, now I surround those words with light and love, believing all will be well not matter the outcome.

In the past I have made prayer so complicated, rambling on without listening thinking I never have the time to pray. It can happen along with everything else. Washing the dishes, walking the dog, driving to work can all happen in the midst of prayer.

Prayer is a dance. There are times you get up and move your feet and times you wait your turn. Listening deeply, finding your own rhythm, dancing and singing in union with Divine Mystery. Living profoundly in every moment, making your life a prayer.

  1. I love that Jenny, the pressure of just trying to put prayer into words that make sense is tiring. Letting the love and thoughts and feelings and intentions flow is freedom to be able to breathe in and out.
