This morning's walk was wet and cold, dark and damp. It was glorious. These two leaves hung delicately to give me a heart for my path.

This morning’s walk was wet and cold, dark and damp. It was glorious. These two leaves hung delicately to give me a heart for my path.

From experience we know that whenever we are truly awake and alive, we are also truly grateful. Br. David Steindl-Rast

It is so easy to go through these days of ours numb to all around us, clueless to our surroundings, standing blind on our path. The words of this Benedictine monk nudge me to respond to it all, the good and the bad, with an open heart, non-judgmental mind and gentle spirit.

Yes, there is so much darkness, absolutely the sadness is deafening, but fully alert and attentive I see there is so much more on the path, so much patiently waiting to be seen, to be heard. To be cracked wide open.

Monday’s Random Thought: It’s Not Cheating if it’s Poetry October 19, 2015

Filed under: Uncategorized — heartwriter @ 9:54 pm

I am going to cheat a little and post my Friday Blog here on Monday’s Blog. I usually don’t create poetry on Friday’s site but I did and I couldn’t let you miss out.

Here is the link for the whole blog, http://www.mamaneedsarefill.com/2015/10/fridays-free-refill-standing-on-the-corner/ Or skip and go to the poem below.

Standing on the Corner

by Jenny Gwinn McGlothern aka: Mama Needs A Refill

Waving goodbye to the school bus, seeing his smiling face, that is the moment when I realize I am  holding my breath.

Scrambling eggs, making sandwiches, signing permission slips, getting out the door on time takes all my focus.

My energy directed toward the feeding and minding of others all until this moment on the sidewalk.

I exhale.

Only me and the dog standing there, I breathe again, not out of relief but awareness.

The busyness of the morning distracts me from what I am feeling deep down inside.

Deep inside of me, that place of wisdom, that place of love and calm, waits.

She waits for me to notice or become too empty until my only choice is to go within.

Waits patiently until distractions are no longer an excuse.

When the bus pulls away and the last wave and smile have been received it is time to turn toward me.

That is scary.

I’d rather chase the bus.

I am excited and want to vomit all at once.

I take another breath and get present.

The rush is over.

The time is now.

I notice a fallen leaf has found its way to my feet.

Just for me.

Encouraging me to be attentive.

Rooting for me to breathe in deeper.

It is so much easier feeding others.

Feeding me is the bigger job, the job that doesn’t come as naturally.

It is the work I am here to do, to foster and embrace, to model and to learn.

Caring for myself is not what I want to do.

It is the work I must do.

The bus is gone, it will be back, for now it is about not just being attentive to the leaves, it is about

noticing whose feet they have fallen on.

We all have a favorite season, this is mine.

We all have a favorite season, this is mine.

On my morning walk, the sky changed six times, the wind pushed and pulled me in every direction and I found yet another tree on fire with color. This season teases me and says, “Come on Jenny, write a poem today.” And so I accept the invitaion and play a little this morning.

Every season has it’s delights,

each with her own fragrance, heat and

touch.

You, Autumn, like no other, have my heart,

with your changing wind and dance of color

you teach me how to be present.

Grounding me to what is now,

for that is all I need.

To stand in your warmth, to be held in your

glow, to be awakend to this life.

Monday’s Random Thought: Created from the Heart October 5, 2015

In Portland this weekend I looked up in the sky just before facilitating a workshop when a heart in the clouds caught my attention. I quickly ran inside to grab my phone, of course it was gone. Only hints of the heart scattered across the sky. These heart filled moments in life can pass quickly if we are not paying attention.

In Portland this weekend I looked up in the sky just before facilitating a workshop when a heart in the clouds caught my attention. I quickly ran inside to grab my phone, it was gone on my speedy return. Only hints of the heart scattered across the sky. These heart filled moments in life can pass quickly if we are not paying attention.

I had the opportunity to hang out a bit yesterday at The Portland Saturday & Sunday Market. The creations made from the artists pulled me in. Talking with a handful of them it was clear this art created from their hearts fueled them. Many  made a living at selling their works of art, others did it as a hobby, this was their passion. Booth after booth presented creation after creation of things I had never seen before.

My colleague and I were in town on business, teaching a life coaching workshop. (www.seattlelifecoachtraining.com) This was our time to play. We couldn’t help bring our work, helping people to live their dreams and discover their purpose, into our Market time. The vendors wanted to know why we were in town. And we wanted to know about their art. Meaningful conversations starting with a smile. Heart to heart connections at hello. Strangers connecting about what lights us up, about the stuff that we are passionate about.

Creating a coffee cup out of a glass jar and a bicycle chain, a necklace from a fork. Two examples of the art I just had to take with me. One, I wanted to support their work by passing some green energy (aka. $) their way and two, their stuff made me smile. Deep down to my toes smile because it wasn’t just stuff. It was stuff with a creation story that grew out of someone’s heart.

(Places in Portland that touched my heart on this recent trip that I highly recommend popping into the next time you visit this fun city: www.artfromnepal.com, www.SteelLeafDesigns.com, www.spoonman.com, www.francesca.com, www.villageatsunriver.com.)
