I have always prided myself in waiting to decorate for Christmas until the second week of December. Having a daughter with a huge Christmas Spirit the last few years I have been persuaded to decorate the first of December. I’ve been good with it, for the most part. In my family growing up, the tree went up a week or days before Christmas and then was left up until January 6th. Over the years early signs of Christmas left me all crotchety and grumpy. Frustrated with early light hangers, store merchants and Christmas Carolers who couldn’t even wait until December.

Last weekend my daughter’s friend rode in the car with us to a soccer game. She asked if we would be willing to turn the radio station to 106.9. This Seattle radio station is the Christmas music station. All Christmas, all the time, during the holiday season. One of my rules, is nothing Christmassy until December. I want to savor it. Don’t want to rush it either.

By the time we reached the soccer game,  I was singing Christmas tunes from the top of my lungs and the girls couldn’t wait to get out of the car. I have been listening to the station ever since. It wasn’t too early for Christmas music afterall. It was just right.

When my daughter asked if we could decorate this weekend for Christmas, I gulped. December 1st isn’t until Tuesday. I answered, On Sunday, not a moment sooner.

The Christmas Carols must have gone to my head because on Friday evening, guess who broke out the Christmas decorations? On an evening walk Saturday I noticed many had jumped into the spirit, the neighborhood was all a glow. I didn’t feel cheated by decorating early, I felt excited, grateful and like a kid. Turns out a week or two earlier than usual is a good thing.

We broke out our Christmas book collection and every evening we are reading a book out loud together in the living room with my snowman collection smiling along between the candlelight. The Christmas lights of the season signal hope, provide beauty and is it ever too early for that?

My usual mode of self expression is with words. After I colored this mandala, I penned a note to my daughter, expressing my love to her through color and words.

My 14 year old daughter has taken on a new nightly ritual, habit, way to close out her day. She colors. Her long time buddy gave her a coloring page in math class a couple of weeks ago and she has been getting out her colored pencils every evening to complete the intricate coloring page.

Last night I joined her. I was itching to do and BE creative. I had some recently printed out mandala coloring pages that I retrieved and joined her at the dining room table. At my Mama Needs A Refill Mini-Retreats coloring is an option at the creative table I set up. I have all the needed supplies. Last night I had no reason not to color.

Sitting in silence next to my teenager, we created. We unwound from our full weekends. We connected to each other without saying a word. I was filled with joy, remembering all the hours we did this very thing when she was 4 years old.

Coloring relaxes. Coloring taps into a creative place of self expression that has no words. My god-daughter’s dad, whom I have known since he was 17,  use to color when he got home from work. His know 18 year old daughter would have all the necessary supplies. He would unwind from his day by putting color to the white page. His wife would tell me, “It total de-stresses him.”

That’s how I felt last night. I wasn’t stressed but the bubbling energy inside of me had a place to go. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and all various shades in between helped me to express the feelings inside of me.

When was the last time you colored? Could it possibly be a way for you to creatively express from the deepest parts of you? Would you be up to trying?

I walk by this ivy plant every morning. But today was the first time I noticed the ONE heart shaped leaf. It all begins with awareness.

Due to the recent events in Paris, I posted this Dalai Lama quote on my FaceBook page, World Peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not just mere absence of violence. Peace is, the manifestation of human compassion. The quote has me thinking and feeling all sorts of things as do the recent events in Paris.

When will we learn and completely get it? When will enough be enough? Will my children live on a planet that gets to this peaceful place? Will their children?

Thinking big, thinking globally is vital and it must start at home. With me. In the way I interact with my small world of family and friends. In my interactions with those I don’t know who cross my path. With how I show up in the world. Where in my life can I show more compassion? How can I live compassionatley in my actions? Where can a shift be made?

I must look at me, not pointing fingers to others. It starts with awareness on myself. There is a lot of room for human compassion in my life. It is time to practice it. One person’s practice of compassion can spread like a bottle of spilled milk on hardwood floor.

We must be wiling to start the ripple. We must be willing to tip over the milk and be the only one with compassion, until it catches on and spreads like crazy.

I could ask you how you will be compassionate today, but first I will look closely at myself and ask me that very question.

Monday’s Random Thought: Connect November 9, 2015

I am wandering, confused and lost when I have lost connection.

Connection to Self, God, those I love, those who matter most to my heart.

If the day is unraveling and I am losing hope every hour, it is because I have forgotten to tether myself to my best Self. I have ignored the invitation of God to gather within or have total disregard to the invitation from the Universe to focus on what feeds my soul. Only when I have touched base with myself and the Divinity in and around me can I begin to connect to those I love. It starts within. Looking outside of me first only gets me more disconnected.

I get pulled to the stuff that drains me, distracted by the things that get me off track. Begin at home, I must remind myself. Go within to be grounded to what matters therefore, connected.

It is a practice to connect. It is my life blood to carve specific time and moments in my day to connect to Self and Source. When I live disconnected from who I am and my beliefs I wither and get lost in the chaos. When I firmly, actively and faithfully step into my connection I see with clarity. My faith in life is reignited.

How will you connect to your Self today? Could it be as simple as getting still for a moment? Could it be as life giving as your heart beat?

Monday’s Random Thought: Dear November November 2, 2015

Dear November,

You are much darker than your friend and neighbor,

October. She has so much color.

You have it too, the darkness

Covers it up or your wind blows it away, so I forget.

You remind me to wait.

Teaching me patience.

I need only be still, you whisper, as you wrap me up in your light when I least expect it.
