Our morning discovery on this Random Thought Monday.

As my dog and I headed to the beach this morning we merged with commuters going in the same direction to catch the water taxi. Walking down Ferry Avenue I heard the click of shoes coming up behind us.

Good Morning, the man and I exchanged in unison. Realizing very quickly he was not passing me down the very long hill, but rather keeping the same rythm with my feet. We shared the same pace. Moved with the length of our stride. He wasn’t in a rush to pass. I wasn’t in the need to walk alone. So we walked together. Side by side. Not knowing each other until that moment yet our convesation went beyond the pleasantries to conversation that mattered. It wasn’t the words. It was the sharing. The sharing of space. Not that we went deep in our 8 am Monday morning conversation. It was that we just opened up to the gift of walking and being in the company of one another. It was the knowing he was on his way to catch a boat to work and I was on my way to swim my dog but here in this three block journey we were delighted to share our way with a total stranger. We didn’t feel awkward about sharing the road and then the sidewalk as we wound are way past trees, views of the Seattle skyline, houses and more commuters walking down the hill.

When it was time for us each to turn in opposite directions, we said goodbye like old friends and yet we had just spent less than five minutes together. THAT IS LOVE. The willingness to connect, to just BE with out judgement, expectation or following any rules. Just the rules of the heart.

Will you follow your heart today and connect to something/someone you have never connected to before?

Monday’s Random Thought: I Believe in You January 18, 2016

I am that loud mother on the sidelines of my daughter’s soccer games. I have known this team of girls and their parents for about four years give or take and some much longer. It is no secret that I am a life coach in my professional world when I show up to these games. This is evident in the cheers that come out of my mouth. I shout things like, “We Believe in You, Do You Believe in You?” “Visualize.” “Opportunity.” And my favorite, “Find your inner Katniss.” (A reference of course to Jennifer Lawrence’s character in the movie/book The Hunger Games.)

Apparently the girls’ favorite is the one about believing. My daughter told me this weekend that one of the newer members of her team was with her basketball team and the girls were chanting their own “believe” cheer. This girl piped up, “We believe in you, do you believe in you?” Her team mates looked at her funny. They hadn’t heard that one. This girl thought my shout from the sideline at a soccer game, was an actual cheer. How cool is that? Some people have a fragrance, football stadium, avenue or clothing line named after them, I have my own cheer!

When I run into my daughter’s soccer mates they smile, “Hi Jenny, do you believe in you?” It is a warm fuzzy in my heart for sure. Dads will chide me on the side lines if the girls are losing, “You may want to break out one of your inspirational chants any time now.”

I believe in you, do you believe in you? Thirteen and fourteen year old girls inspire each other on the field with this simple question. And I ask you, the same. Do you believe in you?

Belief is the first step that leads you to more. A fundamental belief in action, possibilty, greatness can catapult you forward. Spring board you to your dreams. Believe first. See it second.

Thank you Martin Luther King, Jr for your dreams and always believing. We have the day off from work and school today to celebrate you. Thank you for keeping the faith and teaching us what can happen when we believe on the field and off.

Monday’s Random Thought: Be vs. Do January 11, 2016

I recently heard some wise words from Deepak Chopra on the topic of success. He says, In order to be successful it is not about what you do it is about your relationship with yourself and how you be in the world.

I find this refreshing. A relief. I find this fulfilling. So often it is not what I do or what I have done that makes me feel good.  It is how I show up that matters to my heart.

This morning I was really annoyed with my son. Details not worth going into but I was mad. So I walked out my anger and I showed up calm, patient, forgiving and able to love him. I think that far outweighs anything else I could have accomplished this morning.

How we show up to ourselves and others inspires, nurtures, supports and touches hearts deeply far more than what we do. Being kind, present, loving, compassionate, respectful, authentic and peaceful now that moves mountains. I think if we stopped basing our worth on what we get done and checked off the list and instead focus our energy on how we BE in the world we’d get a whole lot further.

Monday’s Random Thought:That Feeling January 4, 2016

When I find a heart rock, I know I am home. At home in my thoughts, at home in my heart.

Yesterday my daughter and I attended the movie Sisters starring two women who make my funny bone laugh and cry at the same time, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.

The one spoiler alert is the line in the movie spoken by a new love interest of one of the sisters that the whole theme of the movie rests on, A house is a building, home is a feeling.

Having been away from our home in Seattle over Christmas break I got that line. I didn’t miss home because home was with me. I had my mom, hubby and kiddos by my side. I will say this though, when we did come back home to Seattle one thing was missing. Our dog was staying with my sister and I would be picking him up the next day. That feeling, was missing. That feeling of love Buford provides. That unconditional, heart beat fast, tail wagging love. I feel that with my family no matter what building I am standing in. No matter standing on a sandy shore, soccer field or around the dinner table. Love is love. That feeling that connects us and holds us up.

I was not born a dog person necessarily, but Buford has turned me into a Buford person. His unconditional love inspires, that feeling for sure.

Where do you feel at home or rather with whom do you feel at home with?
