What a treat, a heart strawberry for breakfast.

Memorial Day Weekend we can always be found at home. We don’t make special plans to do anything big and exciting or complete big projects. We simply stay home as a family.

Every weekend leading up to Memorial Day is filled with track meets, soccer games, softball games, plans and more plans. This is the one weekend with nothing on the calendar. That opportunity to sleep in and wake up without an agenda has been just what we needed. Time to unwind, time to connect with each other without running to the next thing. We have cooked, laughed and vegged out together. In the end doing nothing extra special has been the most special thing of all. Just being together, doesn’t get more special than that.

Monday’s Random Thought: Everyone Has Their Opinion May 23, 2016

We are bombarded with opinions of others all day long. At the end of the day it is simply their opinion, you still get to make up your own mind. (Thank you to my 17 year old friend for allowing me to use her senior photo shoot pic here on heartwriter.)

I listen to myself dole out unsolicited advice to my children. I observe the questions I ask my clients and I hear my words as I offer a possible suggestion to aid in their decision. My ears perk up at the coffee shop when I hear another offer their perspective like it is manna that should be received. In the end these are all opinions. Sometimes off the mark, sometimes spot on. You are still the one who gets to decide if it is for you or not. You get to choose to believe other’s opinions and take them on as your own or dismiss them completely. When you whittle it all down the only time you must take in another’s opinion is if it speaks to your heart. If it makes you sit up and say,”Oh yes, that is for me”.  If it makes your heart beat fast or nudges you in the gut then perhaps this is leading you in the right direction. If tears run down your cheeks or if you feel like you are finally being understood.  If it makes you want to run and dance, leap for joy. If you feel seen. If not, it was for the other person, not you. Let it go. If it comes back, pulling on your heart strings, then go for it. Then again, you could totally ignore this, after all it’s just my opinion.

Monday’s Random Thought: Make Room May 16, 2016

What will you make room for in your heart today? There is always room for love, you need only step aside and get out of your own way.

It’s been a weekend of visiting the past, connection and renewal. When you run into someone who knew you when you were in kindergarten you reflect a little. Then you go to a funeral the next day and you reconnect with those who knew you in high school you reflect even more. The gift in it all is no matter what you remember about yourself those you are reunited with remember the good stuff you forgot. It’s so easy for us to remember the awkward, the uncomfortable, the pain, but the stuff that resurfaces with more power, more life giving energy is the love. If you find yourself reflecting on the past today, remember the love. For that is the place where all that matters resides. The other stuff, means nothing, nothing that lasts. Forgiveness does that, it allows the other stuff to slip away.  Allowing more room for love to hang out. To grow again. To take root and blossom.

Monday’s Random Thought: Path Walking May 9, 2016

No matter what path you choose every choice will lead you to right where you need to be.

Traveler, there is no path. Paths are made by walking. — Antonio Machado.

There have been so many times in my life I have stood at the cross roads and wondered, scratching my head, which way do I go? Standing there not moving doesn’t make it any easier to decide. I take a deep breath, choose with my heart, have faith. Then I move my feet. I trust. I fall. I get up again. And it is then I realize I am making my path as I go, one step at a time.

Monday’s Random Thought: Headphone Connection May 2, 2016

A lawn on one my recent morning walks was full of petal hearts. I hope the owners didn’t rake them up for their display of love blessed me all day long.

I admit I am prejudice toward head phones. Not a fan. Out in public, to me it signifies, “Leave me alone, I’m busy.” Many a time I have walked by a stranger wearing headphones, said hello to them only to be ignored or greeted with a blank stare. One morning last week I softened the edge on my stance.  Jogging toward my dog and me on our morning walk was the same lady we passed by the previous morning.  As her steps approached us, she took off her headphones, slowed down her pace a bit and said loudly to us, “Your dog is beautiful, he just kills me.”

I replied with thanks and during our short exchange I had forgotten my judgy outlook on headphone wearers. She changed me in that moment. All I want is connection. Even to strangers passing by me on the same sidewalk. I will remember now that perhaps that is exactly what those wearing headphones are doing, connecting. Connecting to what matters to them, whether it is music, a conversation with a friend, listening to a book on tape. The next morning we passed my neighbor blocks from our neighborhood who was doing just that, listening to a book on tape. When she saw us, she pulled off her earplugs and walked across the street to greet us. Another judgment no longer valid. We definitely connected. At the end of her conversation she went back to her book and I went back to walking with my dog.

Prejudice, judgment not valid when proven false.

I can continue to smile and greet passersby wearing headphones and earpieces regardless of how they respond. I can let go of lumping everyone into one category. I can open up to being proven false, certainly makes life more interesting.
