Even if my kids aren’t in to dressing up, very grateful they still like to carve pumpkins!

If you grew up here in America, I would imagine that you have Halloween memories. Here are some of mine I will share with you. Enjoy the fun and joy of season. Cheers!

Sister Molly painting on my clown face,

Squeezing mom’s belly with both arms while she removed my two too tight pig tails

Sugar daddies handed over

Trick or Treating with Jill, no parents, big girls now

Baby, Hobo, Witch, Jane of the Jungle, Psycho gal in the shower, Pregnant Nun

My pregnant belly with a painted pumpkin

Smashed pumpkins

Pumpkin guts, pumpkin seeds

Joyful children, accept mine, they never really liked Halloween

Too much candy

Candy in pillow case til March

Dressing up

Being silly

Creating joy

Son’s first big sex talk over Halloween dinner, age five

Oh, maybe that’s why they don’t like Halloween….

Me circa early 1970’s eating the only sugar daddy allowed until my mom made me fork them over under the guise to save my teeth. (Nice try mom!)

Monday’s Random Thought: I Choose Mio Marito (My Hubby) October 24, 2016

A heart leaf texted to me from my dear friend this week.

A number of years back now, the kids were little, hubby and I saw a marriage counselor. We were in a place of needing some support, a little tweak here and there. In the three or four times we visited this counselor, we both received one life giving take away.

Eighteen years back, on this very day, October 24, 1998 we said, “I do.”

The take away from the marriage counselor was that she asked us to turn to each other and to say, “I choose you.” One at a time, looking each other in the eye. I still feel the goose bumps I felt all over in that moment.

That’s it, three powerful words. I. Choose. You. Since then, in good times and in bad, we stop, look each other in the eye, text one another if one is traveling, speak out to each other right in front of our teenage kids, “I choose you.”

See Mio Marito doesn’t need me to complete him and I don’t him to complete me. He walks in a room and my heart still skips a beat and of course the same happens to him when he sees me, duh!  Absolutely, we annoy each other with our little habits, but we love each other despite of them. I don’t need him to be the best me, but he brings out the best me, he supports me like no other, even when I am not being my best.

Sure looking back on the last eighteen years of marriage, if I would do it all over again maybe I would have made some different choices in the things I said, the way I behaved or the the things I did. I would however, not have chosen a different partner in crime. I would choose Mio Marito again, just like I do every day.

Monday’s Random Thought: Church Poem October 17, 2016

Another timely gift, this morning’s text from a friend.

Church Poem (Working Title)

I went to church yesterday and I didn’t even have to get in the car.

I brought my dog and we cruised the neighborhood on foot.

Arriving at our prayer spot that overlooks the Puget Sound, I heard the choir,

I witnessed a thousand miracles in the crashing waves.

Giving thanks to the trees, having fellowship with my dog, I received communion without tasting a host, but by being in union with the beauty all around.

Even the grey clouds.

Feeling full and blessed, I remembered the many Sunday mornings in the pew, not with longing, but with appreciation.

That was church for me then and in this moment this is church for me now.

God felt closer to my heart walking in the wind than sitting inside sheltered from the cold.

Recognizing the love of God bubbling inside, I heard a church bell chime.

Deep, soothing gongs, a calling home, not to another place but to here.

To now. To the moment I am in, an affirmation that church doesn’t have to be a place I go to, but rather, a place I create in my heart, where ever I am, whomever I am with.

Like the timeliness of the church bell, I felt a nudge, God tugging at my sleeve to turn around, and it was there in the grey sky, from the spot I had heard the choir, my sign, better than any homily, a rainbow.

Fully arched.

I thought about pulling out my phone and taking a picture, but I remembered, I was in church, and I always felt a little funny about taking a picture in a sanctuary.

So I did what my son does, I took a mind picture.

I thanked God again and asked her to touch and bless the world, just like she was doing now with her multi-colored paintbrush.

I went to church yesterday and I didn’t even have to get in the car.

Monday’s Random Thought: Feeding On Fear, No Thanks October 10, 2016

Friday’s discovery in the desert.

When we eat fear for breakfast, we are hungry for it at lunch time, then when dinner rolls around, devouring fear is habitual.

This is my thought after painfully sticking with watching the presidential debates last night. I don’t have to eat the same thing others are eating when it comes to making my choice. I can choose faith, love, belief and I can trust, letting go of the fear that others consume, for it doesn’t have to be my dessert.

Monday’s Random Thought: Heart & Mind Need to Play on the Same Team October 3, 2016

Heart discovery on a recent trip out of town.

This weekend I set an intention in my journal to have quality family time with all three members of my family: hubby, daughter, son. My heart longs for connection with them when we have been busy and going in many different directions. The weekends don’t always provide space to connect, with all three, yes, hubby too, playing soccer every weekend and a teenager with a whole new schedule.

This weekend I noticed how my own behavior and distractions can get in the way of connecting with those in front of me. My family wasn’t different this weekend, I was. I paid attention to the things that I thought about speaking out and instead took a breath and let them go. I noticed my busy active personality choose to linger longer at the breakfast table where we were all gathered.

With subtle changes in my own actions my heart was full by Sunday night. We had connected as a family unit, and I connected individually with all three of my cuties. We didn’t take a long family walk together or play board games for hours on end, two things in my fantasy mind that I would LOVE to happen every day, but the quality connection occured in little ways. Big meaningful little ways. My son taught me how to play a song on the piano, my daughter accompanied me on two grocery store trips and even though I can’t stand football, I asked my husband some questions during the Coug (Washington State University) football game vs. some team wearing green and yellow, that helped me learn a little bit more about a game I don’t exactly care for, but I do care for my hubby. And if you marry a Coug, well, then every fall they will be in front of the TV on Saturdays for at least three hours. I could connect with him and find my own joy despite my feelings for the sport. We cooked in the kitchen together before the game, giving me the connection I desired.

Recent find on a beach walk.

I didn’t have to tell myself “every weekend sucks because we do our own thing”, instead I noticed, was aware and made different choices.

I can hold a vision of connection in my heart and get out of my mind what that needs to look like and walk away smiling, filled up, grateful, believing.
