Monday’s Random Thought: Noticing November 28, 2016

Filed under: From The Heart — heartwriter @ 11:47 pm

I’ve been noticing a lot of grudges in the air. She said. He said. She did. She didn’t. He won’t. I actually woke up thinking about someone else’s grudge this morning. It had nothing to do with me, yet I was thinking the whole situation would be better if forgiveness was given. But it got me thinking, what forgiving do I need to do in my own life? Sure easy for me to pass judgement and assess what someone else should do. The day hadn’t gotten very far along when I realized that I had no right. It was time for me to look in, not out. That was when the hard work began.

Monday’s Random Thought: I Will Not Live As Though I Am Already Dead November 21, 2016

Washing some of my rocks this morning. Yesterday I used them in a burn ritual and they were all covered with ash. Ahhh, out with the old, in with the new!

I am re-reading a book that I know I must read again. I have become itchy, complacent and walking through my days too busy, too pre-occupied, with what, really? This book on my shelf found me at the right time. Thank you author Dawna Markova for your beautiful book, I Will Not Die An Unlived Life, Reclaiming Purpose and Passion.

The beginning of Chapter One in I Will Not Die an Unlived Life by Donna Markova.

In many ways I do live my life wide open as the poem suggests, but in other ways it is clear to me, where I am closed, turned away, shut off. Powerful to me how another’s words can come to me just when I need them, like a rain cloud on an unbearably hot day in the desert.

If you are walking in the desert or closed up perhaps Markova’s words will inspire you to inhabit your life with arms wide open, revealing your heart in a whole new light.

This morning’s cup of tea, while writing you, dear readers. Cheers!

Monday’s Random Thought: How the Heart Carries November 14, 2016

A friend’s discovery on a recent walk. A passerby’s creation using nature for paint, Mother Nature as the pallet, vision pure, raw, from thin air.

On Sunday the kid’s and I had family church in the living room. We do this, not with regularity, but enough that it is a part of us. I light a candle, we come together. Connect. Share. Give thanks. Discuss. Laugh, cry if we feel the urge. Yesterday, I decided to read a new poem, one I hadn’t even read until that morning. Mary Oliver’s poems touch me to the core and I thought you too might like to hear this one.

Heavy

That time

I thought I could not

go any closer to grief

without dying

I went closer,

and I did not die.

Surely God

had His hand in this,

as well as friends.

Still, I was bent,

and my laughter,

as the poet said,

was nowhere to be found.

Then said my friend Daniel

(brave even among lions),

“It’s not the weight you carry

but how you carry it —

books, bricks, grief —

It’s all in the way

you embrace it, balance it, carry it

when you cannot, and would not

put it down.”

So I went practicing.

Have you noticed?

Have you heard

the laughter

that comes, now and again,

out of my startled mouth?

How I linger

to admire, admie, admire, admire

the things of this world

that are kind, and maybe

also troubled–

roses in the wind,

the sea geese on the steep waves,

a love

to which there is no reply?

After I read Oliver’s poem we talked about our friends, we each picked three and went around the circle sharing what we appreciated in these friends. Then it was time for communion.

I cut a molasses cookie into healthy host size and we blessed each other, offering, receiving a bit of love with crystalized sugar sprinkled on the top.

Even when we carry heaviness there is plenty of space to allow the light to get in.

Monday’s Random Thought: Sweet Bird November 7, 2016

Today our daughter is 15! So I offer a repost of what I wrote when she turned 9. Our daughter doesn’t wear her heart on her sleeves, but her compassionate heart blesses us every day. Her strength awes me, her confidence blows me away and her gentle spirit touches my life deeply.

Our bundle of love even today at 15, fills me with joy!

heartwriter.wordpress.com/2010/11/07/sweet-bird/ (for original, or just see below)

Many babies, on emerging from their mother’s womb, resemble baby birds.  Mouth agape, wide eyes – searching.

When our daughter was born, nine years ago today, it didn’t take us long to nick name our precious baby girl, sweet bird.

The name stuck.  Her sweetness has only multiplied as we watch her grow and blossom, develop her own wings.

Every year on our children’s birthdays I get out the photo albums and decorate the refrigerator door with the birthday child’s pictures.  This year I went a little nuts, covering every spot on the fridge door, weepy and teary pouring over the captured moments of our sweet bird’s nine years on this planet.

You forget, at least I do, that they were ever that little.  You forget the bad hair cuts, the cute outfits, as well as the mismatched ones, naked moments in the kitchen.

We all say how fast time goes and we all feel the magnitude of that remark, but when you stop and look at photograph after photograph of past memories, both remembered and forgotten, you feel it in your bones.  As you wipe the tears and can’t keep from smiling how your sweet little bird is no longer little but definitely still quite sweet.
