I hug longer. Over the last couple of months I squeeze whom ever I am hugging a few moments longer than usual. I read that a twenty second hug produces the same endorphins, natural release of necessary chemicals as an anti-depressant. It has been over eight years since I stopped taking anti-depressants and learning this information, whether it is true or not, has caused me to lean in longer. I even tell the one being hugged, “I’m not letting go yet.”
I whisper to my son, “A little longer, I’m not done.” “I tell me daughter, get ready for a long hug.” No words need to be spoken to my hubby, the ultimate long hugger. I notice I am doing this with friends and even new folks in my world. I don’t release my arms as quickly as I did before.
I believe there is power in the hug. Silent connection. Always opens us up to vulnerability, so I always ask before just hugging, “May I give you a hug?” In that moment of giving, I too, am receiving, big time.
There is science behind it. As I am not a scientist, more a poet, seeker, word-girl type, I know I feel seen, heard, accepted, acknowledged and loved all in a hug. And of course, the longer the better. A short hug can feel like a courtesy, a formal gesture, but a long hug says without words, I am here, you are here, we are in this together.
Hi, I’m Jenny Gwinn McGlothern, Certified Transformational Master Life Coach, Retreat Leader, Writer, Teacher and Seeker. As founder of my retreat business, Mama Needs A Refill, LLC, one way I know I fill my cup is by showing up to a blank page to write.
