Monday’s Random Thought: An Offering to Let it Go February 27, 2017

A great way to let something go if you need a little more than doing it in your mind, is to write it on a rock and toss that rock in the water.

I am learning the power, the incredible life giving power and huge gift in not taking it personally. The more I get that it isn’t about me, the more that forgiveness is my best friend.

This weekend my husband was tired. Really tired. We had only a short bit of time together as I was teaching and he was getting the kids to where they needed to be. I thought about letting him know that his reservedness made me feel like it was something I did. But then I remembered when he is tired he is quiet. And when he is quiet, even though I think it, it doesn’t change how he feels about me.

I get there is value in telling others how there actions make us feel, but in this I found more value in letting it go. I found strength in my own process of seeing it for what it was not for what my mind was trying to do. Make it something it wasn’t. I slept on it and released it. I had no need to bring it up and I still don’t. I understood what it feels like to stand in his tired shoes and I remembered he loves me even when he is not talking much. And… I reminded myself that what matters more than anything is the power in self love.

I offer this today because I see that it is a universal thing, this taking it personally. What would happen if you recognized it, then released it? Would it help in your relationship with others? Would it help in your relationship with yourself?

Monday’s Random Thought: Commit February 20, 2017

On this President’s Day I am observing where I show up.

I must be committed to my spiritual connection for that is where I put my energy.

I must be committed to my loved ones as their state of being becomes the backdrop to my life, the ground I walk on.

I must be committed to writing as I show up with pen in hand page after page, week after week, month after month, year after year.

I must be committed to helping others because that is where I jump in without looking back.

I commit to living on purpose, with purpose for a greater purpose I can’t even grasp. I step with one foot at a time, trusting, believing, ready for what will come.

What are you committed to and how do you demonstrate your commitments?

Monday’s Random Thought: Agradecido February 13, 2017

Hearts in chocolate, always grateful for that sweetness.

Traveling in Mexico yesterday, my friend noticed his RV had a flat tire. Sunday. Foreign country. Flat tire. Could have been messy. Not even close. Smooth. Easy. Hassle free.

We spent an hour and a half at this road side mom and pop tire shop. The neighborhood gathering spot. I thought the children gathered, perched on tires, taking in the activity belonged to the shop owner. Nope. Neighborhood kids. The open space was dusty and shaded by its thatched roof. Tires of every shape and size strewn through out the shop. Grease stained stools for anyone needing to wait comfortably, rest a bit.

The only one in the shop who spoke English was the young man who brought his dune buggy to be worked on. We engaged in conversation each eager to learn new phrases in the other’s native tongue.

My English not so good, he told me. I am sorry I don’t know more.

No, no, no, I quickly jumped in. I am in your country. You don’t need to speak English. I wish I could speak your language. I should speak your language in your country.

Unfortunately, my three years of high school Spanish has escaped me. When given the opportunity to speak it, Japanese or German words come to mind instead. Words of living overseas, being raised by a mother whose first language was not English.

So we stood there out in the sunshine each doing our best to learn the others language. Brother, hermano. Son, hijo. Dog, perro. Private school, escuela privada.

I asked my new translator how to say, I am so grateful in spanish. After a dozen times practicing my new phrase I went over to our angel fixing our flat tire. Estoy muy agradecido, I told him.

Denada, denada.  You’re welcome. You’re welcome. The younger neighborhood boy, the same age as my hijo, and now the young hijo of the mechanic, helped us secure the moped on the back of the newly fixed RV. Authentic kindness. Ambalidad. True generosity. Generosidad.

I will probably never see these kind, geneous souls again. I will always remember the moment of standing under the same sun, speaking the same language with different words.

Monday’s Random Thought: More than Habit February 6, 2017

Filed under: From The Heart,Uncategorized — heartwriter @ 8:31 pm

It just wouldn’t feel like Monday if I didn’t show up to the blank page. I considered not showing up, my reasons are valid, it is noon and I am still in my pajamas. A stomach bug has decided to visit and I don’t have much energy. But as I look out at the falling snow, a magical scene out my window, I want to show up. Even if I don’t have much to say, this writing every Monday has become a part of me, more than a habit.

My dog snores in the corner, the clock ticks, the furnace clicks on and even though I can’t go out and play in the snow, I am so grateful for its gift. I am even grateful for this minor bump in the road of illness. My body needs rest and I will listen to her.

I am grateful for it all, the not feeling like me, the tired lack of energy, the discomfort and inconvenience that comes with being ill, for this being grateful, like my writing every Monday, has become habit.

Monday’s Random Thought: Hug it Out January 30, 2017

Hugs. The wonder drug that has been around since the beginning of time.

I hug longer. Over the last couple of months I squeeze whom ever I am hugging a few moments longer than usual. I read that a twenty second hug produces the same endorphins, natural release of necessary chemicals as an anti-depressant. It has been over eight years since I stopped taking anti-depressants and learning this information, whether it is true or not, has caused me to lean in longer. I even tell the one being hugged, “I’m not letting go yet.”

I whisper to my son, “A little longer, I’m not done.” “I tell me daughter, get ready for a long hug.” No words need to be spoken to my hubby, the ultimate long hugger. I notice I am doing this with friends and even new folks in my world. I don’t release my arms as quickly as I did before.

I believe there is power in the hug. Silent connection. Always opens us up to vulnerability, so I always ask before just hugging, “May I give you a hug?” In that moment of giving, I too, am receiving, big time.

There is science behind it. As I am not a scientist, more a poet, seeker, word-girl type, I know I feel seen, heard, accepted, acknowledged and loved all in a hug. And of course, the longer the better. A short hug can feel like a courtesy, a formal gesture, but a long hug says without words, I am here, you are here, we are in this together.

Monday’s Random Thought: So Blessed January 23, 2017

This chakra talisman gift I recently received has a little heart, of course!

Giving and receiving are two opposites that need each other I tell my clients, students and friends.  And you speak out exactly out what you need to hear even when you think it’s for others. This weekend while I had the honor, grace and privilege to facilitate 28 life coach students in their final 20 hours bringing them to graduation last night, I received. I received all weekend long in and out of class. As I reflect upon recent blessings, here is what I know:

I received LOVE from my son’s hug, my husband’s text and my daughter’s cleaning up the kitchen.

I received  PATIENCE from the opportunity to step into another’s shoes, mind and driver seat.

I received GRACE in the hummingbirds’s visit, the moon’s hello, the visitors in my dream.

I received JOY in a student’s laugh, seeing my husband’s face, a vase of tulips.

I received PEACE in a thousand loving words, the light of a single candle, my inhale & exhale, chakra gems, my daughter cleaning the kitchen (bonus points for giving me love & peace), the quiet, the noise, the dark, the light, a hundred kind words,  31 hugs, poetry, Mt. Rainier, naked trees, God’s loving embrace.

I am a giver who receives just as much as I give for it is in receiving that my heart expands, my cup overflows and my spirit dances on air.

Monday’s Random Thought: Be the Light January 16, 2017

Discovered yesterday on the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. – Martin Luther King, Jr.

We MUST watch our thoughts and take responsibility for our words and actions if we truly want change, if we truly want peace.

The best and most I can do is practice walking in love every day. It’s not an easy walk, but I must. That is why I am here.
