Monday’s Random Thought: Not Happening April 17, 2017

Filed under: Uncategorized — heartwriter @ 8:55 pm

Sometimes you must surrender. I love showing up to you, blank page, every Monday, but today just can’t do it. Wish I could say I am hung over from too much Easter candy. Wish I could string something poetic in honor of what would have been my dad’s 90th birthday today. But I am exhausted from nerve medication and am going to take a nap.

No Blog today, come again next Monday.

Hi, I’m Jenny Gwinn McGlothern, Certified Transformational Master Life Coach, Retreat Leader, Writer, Teacher and Seeker. As founder of my retreat business, Mama Needs A Refill, LLC, one way I know I fill my cup is by showing up to a blank page to write. Thank you for stopping by and reading my Random Monday Thoughts, because I will be honest that fills my cup too, knowing others are reading my filled page. Life is too short to blog about anything else unless it touches my heart. Please know I appreciate you joining me on this journey whether you visit every week since I began in 2009 or this is your first blog stop.

Monday’s Random Thought: Not Define You April 10, 2017

In the Disney movie Moana the protagonists teach us not to be defined by our circumstance. Maui, voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, is a half god, half mortal who believes he is only himself with his super powers which are only available when his magic hook is working. Moana, the daughter of tribal chief, must stay in her village because of her father’s fears. Her heart longs to be out in the ocean. Both characters discover what is deep within matters, not by what is seen on the outside.

This morning at my post-surgical foot appointment, my awesome doctor who has been along the journey on this long, strange recovery, looked me in the eye and said,”Don’t let this define you.” He went on to say, I will get through this and urged me to not let my swollen – nerve pain – healing foot, define what I do or my day or how I be. And he is right. There is a difference to being limited when in the process of recovery and letting it have power over me.

I ask you, dear reader, are you letting your circumstance define you? How can you alter that definition?

Monday’s Random Thought: April – National Poetry Month April 3, 2017

I was informed over the weekend that April celebrates National Poetry Month. (Thank you Cynthia.) Found this out after I began a new morning ritual of creating a daily poem. So today, I will pull from the archives. This is from a decade ago, I believe. Inspiration on an afternoon walk, attending a writing retreat on Whidbey Island.

Monday’s Random Thought: One Step March 27, 2017

As one to not sit still long, a lady of action, this healing and recovery process from foot surgery has been interesting.  First, there was an unexpected second surgery. Then there was the pain.  I had a plan. I would color, read, rest, allow my body to heal as I received help from others. I would give myself a week or two to just be and then I would work on my book.

Every week there has been progress. It feels like slow progress, but movement forward non the less. It’s been a week since narcotics. Two weeks since napping all day.

Each day something new. Friday I put on jeans instead of pjs and had a phone client. Saturday I moved from the bed to the coach. Sunday I moved to the dinning room table.

This morning at my doctor’s visit I got rid of the special sock and can now open up my bandages and wash my foot!

This sounds slow. But this is progress. The moving forward counts not the pace. This is gving me the opportunity to be. The gift to receive. I am practicing patience. I am learning the value of stillness. Not always fun. Growth isn’t always joyful. That’s why they call it growing pains.

We all have our own experience of having to slow down when we don’t necessarily want to slow down. One. Day. At. A.Time. One. Step. Where in your life can you see the value of slowing it down? Is there an area in you life, a relationship or situation, where you can recognize the power or one? Simply one thing at a time. Step by step. In this slowing down we are allowing room for growth making space for birth to happen. Tis the season, it is spring. Let’s step out of the way and allow. Step. By. Step.

Today standing on one foot. Tomorrow both feet. The next day dancing. Okay, just the fox trot. Next week the cha cha. Patience dancer, patience.

Monday’s Random Thought: Be Your Own Hero March 20, 2017

In the song Search for the Hero by one of my favorite British bands, The M People, vocalist Heather Small belts it right from her heart to mine when she sings,

“Sometimes the river flows but nothing breathes.

A train arrives but never leaves.

It’s a shame.

Oh life, like love that walks out of the door,

Of being rich or being poor.

Such a shame.

But it’s then, then that faith arrives

To make you feel at least alive.

And that’s why you should keep on aiming high,

Just seek yourself and you will shine.

You’ve got to search for the hero inside yourself,

Search for the secrets you hide.

Search for the hero inside yourself

Until you find the key to your life…….

….Just keep the flame of truth burning bright.

The missing treasure you must find

Because you and only you alone

Can build a bridge across the stream.

Weave your spell in life’s rich tapestry –

Your passport to feel supreme.

You’ve go to search for the hero inside yourself,

Search for the secrets you hide.

Search for the hero inside yourself

Until you find the key to your life. ”

So I ask are you having faith in yourself? Rely on your strengths, you have so much strength within you that you don’t even know is there. Let it be uncovered. What if the very best thing that could happen to you would be that you experience something that leads you to leaning on your own hero within?

Monday’s Random Thought: Giving it Up March 6, 2017

This Monday I share a blog from last year.

Repost: https://heartwriter.wordpress.com/2016/03/07/mondays-random-thought-giving-it-up/

Lent. That season of reflection and preparation that runs 40 days until Easter. Half way there. I grew up Catholic where you gave something up during this season. Parents encouraged us to give up TV and candy while they tried their efforts at giving up alcohol, meat, eating between meals, sugar.

As an adult I too tried my efforts in the past of giving things up but it never brought me closer to God. It left me frustrated feeling like a failure. My reasons always self-focused, Oh, I can lose weight during Lent if I give up “sinful” foods. Years ago instead of focusing on “giving up” something I used the season of Lent to “take on” something. I took on meditating ten minutes every day, sitting in silence, saying something kind to others. These efforts brought me a lot closer to anything Divine than “giving up” ever has.

This Lenten Season I chose to walk that old school Catholic way proving you can take the girl out of Church, but you can’t take Church out of the girl. I  chose to give up something as well as take something on. (Drinking more water every day. And yes, peeing more this season in the process.)  It wasn’t alcohol, red meat, or sugar. I chose something that gets in the way of me living fully far more than a glass of wine, tacos or a chocolate chip cookie. And trust me a lot more challenging. (At least for me.)

Judgement. Self judgement is where I had to start before I could begin the journey of letting go of judgement of others. I have stumbled. I have succeeded. I have failed, I have begun again. I have become so much more aware of how critical, defeating judgement stands in the way of me loving fully. It blindly blocks any Divine Light from getting through. I feel lighter. I feel whole. I may never give it up completely for it has its positive place indeed. But I see the self defeating line it draws in my heart. I am able to catch myself now with practice and give it up on the spot, redirecting, reframing, letting go, taking a different path.

The path will more than likely take a lot longer than 40 days. With awareness and learning every step I am half way there and that is perfect. I am grateful to be half way there. No judgement for how long it takes. Only faith. Only trust. One step at a time.

Whether or not you observe Lent is there something you want to give up or take on that can lead you down your path of living life more fully, connected to all you are meant to be?

Monday’s Random Thought: An Offering to Let it Go February 27, 2017

Filed under: From The Heart — heartwriter @ 3:06 pm
20170227_070159

A great way to let something go if you need a little more than doing it in your mind, is to write it on a rock and toss that rock in the water.

I am learning the power, the incredible life giving power and huge gift in not taking it personally. The more I get that it isn’t about me, the more that forgiveness is my best friend.

This weekend my husband was tired. Really tired. We had only a short bit of time together as I was teaching and he was getting the kids to where they needed to be. I thought about letting him know that his reservedness made me feel like it was something I did. But then I remembered when he is tired he is quiet. And when he is quiet, even though I think it, it doesn’t change how he feels about me.

I get there is value in telling others how there actions make us feel, but in this I found more value in letting it go. I found strength in my own process of seeing it for what it was not for what my mind was trying to do. Make it something it wasn’t. I slept on it and released it. I had no need to bring it up and I still don’t. I understood what it feels like to stand in his tired shoes and I remembered he loves me even when he is not talking much. And… I reminded myself that what matters more than anything is the power in self love.

I offer this today because I see that it is a universal thing, this taking it personally. What would happen if you recognized it, then released it? Would it help in your relationship with others? Would it help in your relationship with yourself?
