Saturday morning’s gift at breakfast.

Connection. I would imagine on a variety of levels this is important to all of us. Yes?

The connections that bring out the best version of me and that fill my cup to overflowing are the ones from the heart.

No worries about what to say or how to say it or to even use words at all.

When I am struggling in life, in relationship, in function, it is because I am disconnected from myself, God, others.

On this Monday morning, the first day of May, I ask you, are you feeling connected? If your answer is, no, I invite you to pause, place your hand on your heart and to first connect to yourself. Be aware of your emotions and needs. Notice what’s going on inside. Then commit to being real and to come from a place of love in your next encounter with another. Warning: This may require putting your phone down. And be aware, connection from the heart may cause crazy things to happen. Good crazy things.

Monday’s Random Thought: Headphone Connection May 2, 2016

A lawn on one my recent morning walks was full of petal hearts. I hope the owners didn’t rake them up for their display of love blessed me all day long.

I admit I am prejudice toward head phones. Not a fan. Out in public, to me it signifies, “Leave me alone, I’m busy.” Many a time I have walked by a stranger wearing headphones, said hello to them only to be ignored or greeted with a blank stare. One morning last week I softened the edge on my stance.  Jogging toward my dog and me on our morning walk was the same lady we passed by the previous morning.  As her steps approached us, she took off her headphones, slowed down her pace a bit and said loudly to us, “Your dog is beautiful, he just kills me.”

I replied with thanks and during our short exchange I had forgotten my judgy outlook on headphone wearers. She changed me in that moment. All I want is connection. Even to strangers passing by me on the same sidewalk. I will remember now that perhaps that is exactly what those wearing headphones are doing, connecting. Connecting to what matters to them, whether it is music, a conversation with a friend, listening to a book on tape. The next morning we passed my neighbor blocks from our neighborhood who was doing just that, listening to a book on tape. When she saw us, she pulled off her earplugs and walked across the street to greet us. Another judgment no longer valid. We definitely connected. At the end of her conversation she went back to her book and I went back to walking with my dog.

Prejudice, judgment not valid when proven false.

I can continue to smile and greet passersby wearing headphones and earpieces regardless of how they respond. I can let go of lumping everyone into one category. I can open up to being proven false, certainly makes life more interesting.

Monday’s Random Thought: Love the One In Front of You February 29, 2016

The creator of these egg muffins I had the pleasure of eating for breakfast Sunday, didn’t even notice the peppers had formed hearts. I notice these things.

In the song lyrics Love the One You’re With, by Stephen Stills, I am sure the musician had a particular focus in mind for the meaning behind his choice of words. Today I am creating my own focus behind the signature line, If you can’t be with the one you love, honey, love the one you’re with.

Whomever you find yourself standing face to face with is an invitation to be present to that person. To connect if even briefly. Present to your interaction with them. Not present to your phone. Not the person walking behind you. Not the person or thing you will be with in ten minutes but the very person right there before your eyes. Whether it is the grocery checker ringing up your groceries or the acquintance who you unexpectedly run into buying milk and apples. Be present to the one who is standing right there. If you can’t be with the person in front of you, you aren’t being present to yourself, your life, the moment.

The one in front of you isn’t there by accident or some unfortunate disruption to your day. They are there for you to connect. And this is what makes my heart ache, the disconnection. The rushing, the avoiding, the failure to look into the eyes of the one before you. Despite those hurredly running past me I get the choice to Love. The. One. I’m. With. And even if they don’t connect with me I don’t have to let that bring me down I can choose to love them anyway.

Will you accept the invitation to connect to the person you find yourself standing with?

Monday’s Random Thought: Connect November 9, 2015

I am wandering, confused and lost when I have lost connection.

Connection to Self, God, those I love, those who matter most to my heart.

If the day is unraveling and I am losing hope every hour, it is because I have forgotten to tether myself to my best Self. I have ignored the invitation of God to gather within or have total disregard to the invitation from the Universe to focus on what feeds my soul. Only when I have touched base with myself and the Divinity in and around me can I begin to connect to those I love. It starts within. Looking outside of me first only gets me more disconnected.

I get pulled to the stuff that drains me, distracted by the things that get me off track. Begin at home, I must remind myself. Go within to be grounded to what matters therefore, connected.

It is a practice to connect. It is my life blood to carve specific time and moments in my day to connect to Self and Source. When I live disconnected from who I am and my beliefs I wither and get lost in the chaos. When I firmly, actively and faithfully step into my connection I see with clarity. My faith in life is reignited.

How will you connect to your Self today? Could it be as simple as getting still for a moment? Could it be as life giving as your heart beat?

Monday’s Random Thought: Soul Connection June 8, 2015

As a heart rock collector, I was in Heaven on this camping trip, as many found their way onto my path.

As a heart rock collector, I was in Heaven on this camping trip, as many found their way onto my path.

Last Tuesday morning ten of us volunteer parent chaperones gathered in room #106 to receive our marching orders for our four hour or more journey to the campsite that would be our home for three nights.

I thought the only passengers in my car would be my son & three of his classmates but I  quickly learned that I would be joined by an adult passenger. The students’ math tutor not only rode in my car, we engaged in conversation that was anything but small talk. In the ferry line just fifteen minutes from school we discovered shared passions, similar outlooks on life and parellel spiritual views. Both writers we found heartfelt connection through words, song and comfortable silence.

Every new topic of conversation brought about one more discovery of commonality. Bonding through mutual understanding. United through experience and perspective. It isn’t every day that you go on a school field trip with your child’s class and connect on a level that matters deeply with another chaperone.

The unfolding of the days camping brought about more shared connection and not just with my car companion. The other chaperones could be seen hiking through the rainforest, walking the beach, making coffee at camp or sitting around the campfire engaged in deep conversation. I found solace in many conversations over mental illness, travelling abroad, cooking, good books and drunken stories of youth. As we performed our duties, we made each other laugh and talked about things we care about, not the weather.

It is an added bonus, a divine gift, synchronicity at its finest to have a connection with someone you aren’t expecting to do much more with than be on the same field trip.

Life is a field trip filled with possibility and how so very lovely that we get the honor of meeting other souls along the way. For this is the stuff that matters, the soul connections that give depth, fruit and light for the journey.

There are basically three ways to connect to another person as well as to ourselves: from our head, from our gut (intuition) and from our heart. When we are willing to shed the layers, cut through the fluff and get to the juicy stuff we find that we have reached out, established connection from our heart. When that vulnerable, real breakthrough has transpired we discover an unexplicable beauty. Miracles are birthed.

Where will you connect from today? Will you witness a miracle?

Monday’s Random Thought: Connection September 8, 2014

Is it important for you to feel connected? Being tethered to something, someone, does it give you peace? Does connection fill you up with an unexplicable love?

I think we spend much of our lives looking for connection. Seeking out people, experiences and things we believe will unite us takes up much of our waking hours, right?

Often I feel connected to something I can’t even see but I feel it in my bones when I look out at the ocean or sit among the trees. There are other times I am with another and I feel like we are miles apart, floating in our own land.

Without connection to something I can’t see, God, Holy Spirit, Divine Mystery or to a person I love, I dry up and drift off into my own land. A lost place with no anchor. In finding that connection, I find myself. Tethered, no longer drifting alone.
