Monday’s Random Thought: Intention Moves You Forward

20160725_083525
Yosemite. Who knew a parking lot could be in the shape of a heart?

At the end of my freshman year of high school my family moved. That meant a new school, new home, new friends, a whole new life. That was over thirty years ago. This weekend I had the opportunity to attend the 30 year reunion of the school I only attended for one year. I was nervous, but I went. These were the people I knew since kindergarten. First friends, first crushes, the firsts of many things.

I went with my life long friend and first best friend. As we gathered in her hotel room before heading to our alma mater, I asked, “What is your intention for tonight?” Jill told me, “To listen, to make those I listen to feel good.”

I shared, “My intention is to have five good connections.” I let go of what that looked like and with whom, but held on to the idea of connecting. By the end of the evening that indeed came true. I connected through sharing, listening, laughing, meaningful hugs more than five times.

I drove home smiling, laughing at myself for being nervous. When you acknowledge your feelings and marry them with an intention it all works out. I took the focus off of my nerves and opened up to possibility.

Is there an area in your life, an event coming up where it would serve you to set an intention? Focus on what matters to you, unattached to what that looks like, then let it go and be ready to receive.

Monday’s Random Thought: Leave Room for Nothing

20160718_095008 (1)
Of course another rock find on a summer walk.

Saturday was the first day all summer with nothing on the agenda. We weren’t on a road trip with miles to make that day. No soccer tournament to drive to and cheer at, no swim meet to attend, no party to buy a gift or make a salad for, no garden to weed, no class to teach, no nothin’ on the calendar. It was awesome.

I didn’t have an itch to make plans.I didn’t feel the urge, the need or have any desire to make myself busy. So unlike my nature. I am a doer. I am a planner. I am a check it off the list kinda gal. But lately, I have noticed a huge shift within. Less is more. No plans are a good thing, not a sign of laziness or lack of motivation.

In this go-go world we need to create more space for nothing. It gives our minds a break, our bodies room to breathe and our hearts space to be.

Will you listen to what all of you needs rather than what your agenda says? Or better yet, will you schedule nothing and be cool with that?

Saturday I showed up more kind, more authentic and definitely more open. A bit softer. Ahh, I say yes to nothing. For nothing always leads to something. It’s not being attached to what that something is that gives me life. More breathing room. Grace.

Monday’s Random Thought: Count to 10

20160711_063231
In the Redwood Forest recently I found a three leaf clover, green side up on my path. Already picked, laying in the dirt. I turned it over. Beauty is everywhere, sometimes you just have to turn over the leaf.

I can be really patient with some things, some people, many situations. I can be really impatient with some things, certain people, particular situations.

Meditation has helped with my patience. Every day, if even for only a handful of minutes. Counting to 10 helps my meditation. Counting to 10 as I breathe keeps me focused. Aligns my mind, preventing distraction. If I can breathe for 10 seconds, be still for 10 seconds, be present for 10 seconds, I can do anything.

Wanting to be patient? Curious about meditation? Start with 10. Count slowly with each inhale and exhale. Then count to 10 again. If you can count to 10, you can do anything. If ten takes awhile and more patience than you have, cool, start with 5, it’s half way to 10.
