Monday’s Random Thought: A Step

20160829_082526
A reader sent me this lovely one found in her path, not an obstacle, a sign to keep moving forward!

“I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.” – Thomas Alva Edison

Often when it comes to reaching a goal, fulfilling a dream, living out a desired thought we stay standing still for fear of making the wrong step. Thomas Edison, a man who knows a thing or two about getting shit done, offers an enlightened approach. In his quote above it is as if he is whispering, Move your feet and if that is the wrong step, great, you still have moved your feet.

What is paralyzing you from moving forward? Whatever it is, fear, anxiety, perfection, dread, invite it along for the ride if it won’t get out of the way. Step anyway with that nagging bugger at your side.

Monday’s Random Thought: Oh, Where Do I Begin?

20160822_070031
I am the lover of walks with my dog Buford and I am so grateful for discovering this heart, high up on a tree Sunday morning. Although I pass this tree often, I love that this was a new discovery.

This post is inspired by and dedicated to my student at Seattle Life Coach Training, Becky. Becky is full of love and teaching her one weekend recently she shared with me a “game” she plays with loved ones. It all starts with, “I am the Lover of…” and you fill in the blank. She is creating a Blog with the same title, I can’t wait to see it and I will share it here with you.

What am I the lover of she asks, oh, where do I begin, I reply.

I am the lover of all things in the shape of a heart, form of a cup or figure of an angel.

I am the lover of going deep with laughter, feelings, expression and of course words.

I am the lover of my hubby’s hair, the whiter it gets the more excited I become. I am the lover of how he supports me, makes me laugh like no other and finishes my sentences, even when he picks the wrong words. I love how he is my best friend. I love how I have ten best friends but he is the one I get to share a bed with even though I am not a lover of sharing a bed with anyone.

I am the lover of my daughter’s strong sense of herself, sweet voice and hearty hugs.

I am the lover of my son’s vulnerable heart, chocolate eyes and cheeky kisses.

I am the lover of the messiness of divorce, mental illness and family dysfunction for it brought me to grace.

I am the lover of all things that represent God, for me that begins with the moon, the trees, communion, all that I can’t see and all that I feel deep in my gut down to my toes.

I am the lover of this life as it continues to unfold within me, above me, through me, in front of me and all around, even in the dark corners.

I am the lover of first drafts and even more so, the lover of do-overs.

I leave you dear reader, with this first draft as I brew another cup of tea and make pancakes for my children, who I am more the lover of when they sleep in late like this, which reminds me, I left out my favorite topic, food. I will leave you wondering what food I am the lover of as you create your own list of all that captures your heart and fills your soul. I have not yet told you, my favorite phrase is the one that ends with a question, so dear reader, what are you the lover of?

Monday’s Random Thought: Can We Keep it Positive?

20160815_153149 (1)
I love the heart photos you all send me, thank you. This one captured on a Pacific Northwest hike.

This weekend at my daughter’s out of state soccer tournament I was struck by the amount of negativity coming from the sidelines. Parents have no filter yelling at refs, players, each other. I had a no filter moment, I regret.

My daughter and her opponent were going after the ball, a good battle, when the other player hooked her arm into my daughter’s arm. This wasn’t square dancing. I reacted without thinking by yelling, “Don’t you dare touch my daughter like that.”

A bit too much. Mama Bear didn’t like how her cub was being treated. Our coach and my husband immediately told me to hush. I did. I wasn’t proud of my over the top reaction. The girl wasn’t called for a foul and she continued to play dirty the rest of the game. I had to let it go. And I did.

During the fifth game of the weekend, the final championship yesterday, as I paced the sidelines I was blown away by the negativity coming from the parents. Their coach was yelling rudely at his players and they would tell him to “shut up.” The players were anything, but positive to each other. I wouldn’t want to play on a team that talked to each other with such disrespect.

The part that really rubbed me the wrong way is that they were winning with crappy spirits. They were a strong, talented team and they had shitty sportsmanship and negative attitudes. I had to let it go. It was hard.

At the end of the game, when we lost 2 – 0, our coach told the girls she would much rather coach her team and lose then coach that team and win. That helped me to let it go. Winning is awesome, but being kind goes a lot further in this world, you just may not get a trophy for it. And you may have to witness those you love fight their own battles.

Monday’s Random Thought: What Can I Learn?

20160808_134627
Someone else’s discovery sent my way. Makes me smile when you readers send me hearts, thank you.

No one likes to be angry or frustrated? It would be uncommon for us to delight in jealousy, sadness, doubt, or fear. These emotions aren’t on the top ten list of how people desire to feel nor are they things people long to experience. They are however, a part of life. These feelings can surface more often than we desire. Instead of ignoring them we can learn from them. All emotions are our teachers, even the ugly, uncomfortable ones.

I recently had the opportunity to learn from my anger. Instead of hushing it I got in touch with it and became curious about it even showing up.  It was here to offer me a lesson and I had a choice whether or not I would receive its blessing. It was a gift for me to open. I became the talk show host in my mind and interviewed it. Asking it all sorts of questions. Poking and prodding with inquisitiveness.  It provided me with clarity, giving me the space to practice patience, offer forgiveness and find my voice.

I have learned over and over that undesirable emotions will continue to surface until I have fully received their lesson. Is there a lesson out there for you to learn as it invites you to grow with it’s unwanted appearance? Instead of being in a rush to make it disappear, what would unfold if you got curious about the opportunity and embraced its lesson?
